Cheap Windows
67If you are in the market for a new window, or a new set of windows, you may be wondering where the best place is to get some cheap windows. There are literally hundreds of brands to choose from in the united states, and deciding on just one can become a difficult task.
If you genuinely care for your home, then you need to keep in mind that cheap windows will generally only last a few years. You will end up paying a lot more in the long term getting them fixed or replaced down the track. Generally speaking, the cheaper style of windows are only single pane, which are a much lower quality and tend to cause more problems than they are worth. If you are able to, you would be much better off with a double pane.
Baby, It's Cold Outside
The lower the strength of the glass, the more cold air will be let in, which will lead to a higher energy bill as you try and heat your house during winter. Here is an interesting experiment to test the effectiveness of the glass in your windows. Light a candle and hold it close to the window. Watch as the flame bends towards the glass, this is caused by the warm flame trying to escape through the coolness of the glass. This is happening throughout your home and is a stark reminder of exactly how much heat is being lost through your windows.
It's not only the glass that tends to under perform in cheap windows, you will find that the frames will also tend to be substandard, and will eventually start to sag under the weight of the glass.
Security
Another reason to not skimp on the windows in your home is security. A cheap single pane window can be easily broken by would be burglars. That's not to say that a double pane will stop them altogether, but it will provide an extra barrier of protection for your home, and make it just that little bit harder for intruders to get in. Of course, if you really want to get security conscious, you are going to have to look at security grills for your windows, or install an alarm system. This can get rather costly however, and really depends on where you live. The likelihood of a .break in is far greater in urban areas than it is in rural settings.
Types of Glass
Another consideration is the type of glass that your window will have. There are four main types of glass that are available in the industry...
- Clear - This is the cheapest option, and is more popular than any other type of glass. Recent developments have allowed this type of glass to be glazed, allowing more protection against the elements.
- Low - Emissivity (or Low E) - This type of glass is fitted with a special covering that helps prevent heat loss, but still allows the maximum amount of light to pass through the glass.
- Heat Absorbing - If you live in an area that has extreme heat during summer, this type of glass will help you. It will absorb up to 40% of the heat that would otherwise be passed into your home.
- Reflective - This glass has a reflective film coated over it, and is also effective in stopping extreme heat from entering your home. It has the added benefit of providing privacy to you if you live in a built up area. Of course, you can acheive the same level of privacy with clear glass by applying opaque window film.
Purchasing Cheap Home Windows
When you have decided upon the type of window that you want to purchase, there are a few options for you to consider in regard to where to buy them from.. If you prefer to look before you buy, it will be well worth your while to go to the yellow pages, or an online directory and see what is available in your local area. It will also help for you to ring the businesses you find before physically visiting their storerooms, this will alleviate the problem of going from place to place and not finding what you want. If however you are comfortable with buying online and having your windows delivered, there are plenty of online options. You should talk to family, friends and neighbours first to get their opinion on what a good window brand is. You will be surprised at how much information you can gather just by asking. After all, everyone has windows in their home, and therefore some experience on the subject. If you hear from someone that has had a bad experience, then you know that you need to look at a different kind of window.
Installation
One of the hidden costs that people tend to forget about is the actual installation of your windows. You get home with your brand new windows, and then realise that you have no idea how to install them properly. You definitely do not want to go the cheap route in getting your windows put in. A poorly fitted window will cause you nothing but grief for years to come, especially if you are in an area that is prone to strong winds and storms. Make sure that you choose a qualified professional to do this work for you. Ideally, try and get recommendations from people you know who have had this kind of work done themselves. Once you have your windows installed, you can look at sprucing them up with some ready made curtains.
Conclusion
In short, the old adage "you get what you pay for" is definitely true for purchasing windows. As tempting as it can be to go out and purchase cheap home windows, in the long term it's not going to be worth it. These are not items that you want to be replacing on a regular basis, so if possible it is well worth your while to spend that extra bit on a quality product that will stand the test of time and the elements.
